An outline of my Sunday sermon which corresponds to the reading of that day, according to the rubrics of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, will be posted to this web page each week. These outlines are not intended to be extensive or exhaustive texts; rather they contain simple bullet points of the main ideas of the sermon which have been offered to the congregation.
Over time, I have found in my experiences that providing the faithful with a copy of the outline when they come to participate in the Divine Liturgy helps them to enjoy the sermon more. They are able to follow it more easily, retain a higher percentage of the information conveyed, and take it home with them where they can reflect on it later, even passing it on and sharing it with family and friends.
Many people have suggested to me that I share the sermon outlines with others beyond those who are present on Sunday. I was reluctant and hesitated to do that for some time, as I was not sure how it would be received. Finally, as I continued to receive the same suggestion time after time, especially from visitors who came to worship with us from other parishes around the country, I decided to take this leap of faith and share the sermon outlines online. I will strive every week to have it ready to be posted as early as possible before the end of the week.
These outlines can serve two purposes. They can help the faithful to understand certain themes of the Gospel lesson as preparation for hearing the appointed reading in the church. In such a way, they can benefit more from the sermon, even if the spoken sermon covers different themes and information from those in the outline. Secondly, my brother priests may wish to consult it for their own use as an additional reference while they prepare their own sermons; hopefully, in such a way, it can enrich the sermons they need to prepare and adjust to meet the needs of their congregations.
If you find these outlines helpful or useful, please do not hesitate to share your comments, suggestions, or even questions, with me.
Humbly,
Fr. Joseph Samaan St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church - Daytona Beach, FL Editor of the St. Nicholas Children’s Orthodox Christian School Bulletin
